If you have some stale sourdough bread in your bread box, use it for making French toast. You can use any sort of rustic sourdough loaf for making this recipe. But if you like tender and custardy French toasts go for sourdough brioche French toast.

    🥖 Why this recipe works

    • Quick and easy breakfast recipe.
    • Approachable. You must be having all the ingredients in your pantry already.
    • Best way to use up the left-over sourdough bread.
    • Eggless recipe. So, if you have an egg allergy or are on an eggless diet, this recipe is for you
    • It has a better texture than regular French toast as sourdough holds up better than Brioche or any rich bread.
    • Customizable. Make it baked, in an air fryer, stuffed, etc.
    • Replace whole milk with plant-based milk to make this recipe vegan.

🍶 Ingredients for Sourdough Bread French Toast

image showing all the ingredients required for making french toast

To make the French toast recipe with sourdough bread you will require following ingredients.

    Sourdough Bread

Start with a left-over sourdough bread, or a fresh one will do just fine. Stale bread makes great French toast. This recipe will make 4 large French Toasts or 6 small toasts. You can double the recipe if making for a larger crowd.

    Whole Milk

I like to use whole milk. You can use whatever you have or like. You can surely use plant-based milk like soy milk or oats milk if you are trying to create vegan sourdough French toast.

    Chickpea flour

As you know by now that all recipes here are egg free. So, we need something to replace eggs. You can use corn flour or chickpea flour for making egg-free French Toast. I like to use chickpea flour. It imparts an eggy texture, taste, and even color to the sourdough French Toast recipe.

But if you do not have chickpea flour, you can use corn flour also.

    Flax meal

Flax meal adds nutritive value to these French toasts. It also makes the batter sticky which helps it to adhere to the sourdough bread slices.

Flax seeds are a great source of omega-3 s fatty acids for a vegetarian diet. Hence, I try to incorporate them in everything that I can. But this recipe turns out better with a tablespoon of flax meal. You can make a flax meal by giving a quick pulse to the flax seeds.

    Cinnamon powder

Well, you can’t make French toast without cinnamon powder. Just a teaspoon of ground cinnamon will do the trick. But if you do not like cinnamon, skip it and replace it with a teaspoon of ground nutmeg.

    Vanilla Extract

Try using pure vanilla extract for the best flavor. You can use vanilla paste or vanilla pods.

    Sugar

I like to add sugar to the batter. It helps the toast get a golden brown color on the outside and a caramel-like flavor on the toast.

    Baking powder

A little bit of baking powder prevents the batter from getting doughy and prevents the French toasts from getting dense and doughy on toasting.

     Salt

A pinch of salt is quintessential to bring out all the flavors together.

    Butter

Use unsalted Butter to toast the bread on a skillet. You can use margarine or vegetable oil of your choice.

🍞 Procedure to make sourdough French toast

    Step 1 Make the batter

It is very easy to make delicious French toast batter. No prep time, just whisk together all the ingredients.

Into a wide bowl add milk, followed by chickpea flour, baking powder, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, salt, sugar, and flax meal. Now grab a whisk and mix everything until a homogenous mixture is formed.

The cinnamon powder will initially stay afloat and take some time to saturate and mix. Simply keep whisking.

images of step by step process

    Step 2 Microwave the batter

Well, this step is optional, but it kills the beany odor of the chickpea four and also makes the batter slightly thicker than the watery one.

So, take the bowl and microwave for 30-40 seconds or until the mixture becomes slightly thick. Heat will activate the starch in the batter. We do not want to pull it all the way to thicken the batter, but just enough to activate the starch.

Step 3 Soak the sourdough bread slices in the batter

Now take a slice of the sourdough bread and place it in the French toast batter. Let it sit in the batter for 10-15 seconds and then flip and soak on the other side.

Step 4 Toast the soaked sourdough slice

Heat a skillet over medium heat and smear with some butter. You can heat a Cast iron skillet or a nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Now, place the soaked sourdough bread on the skillet. Let it toast for 2-3 minutes on low to medium heat and then flip and let it toast on the other side.

When done, remove onto a plate and repeat. There you have, the best sourdough French Toast recipe.

How to serve sourdough French toast

You can serve them with powdered sugar, fresh berries (like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries), berry compote, whipped cream, brown sugar syrup, maple syrup, and or butter.

    Variations of sourdough French toast

You can make these toasts in the below variations:

    1.  Baked sourdough French toast: It is perfect when feeding a large tribe. Bake the batter-soaked sourdough bread slices in a baking dish. All toasts can be toasted in the oven altogether.
    2. Stuffed French toast with sourdough bread: You can make a custard cream, chocolate spread, peanut butter, or fruit-filled sandwich using the sourdough bread slices and then dip it in the batter to make its French toast.
    3. Savory sourdough French toast. It is a different recipe altogether. Instead of sugar salt and savory complementary spices are added.
    4. Air-fried French toast: If you want to make French toast without the hint of any form of fat, you can air fry them. Toast sourdough French toast at 350 0F for 3-4 minutes on each side in an air fryer.

🫙Storage and freezing sourdough French Toast

To store the leftover French toasts, you can refrigerate or freeze them. If you are going to use them up in a day or two, it is best to refrigerate them. When fully cooled, place them in an airtight container or a ziplocked bag.

For prolonged storage, it is ideal to freeze them. You should wrap each toast individually in a clingwrap and then place them in a freezer-safe bag. Alternatively, you can put pieces of parchment paper between each slice and put them in a ziplocked bag. Then warp them in a foil and label them. The frozen sourdough French toast should last 3-4 months if stored properly.

    💭Pro Tips

Keep note of the following to execute this sourdough baguette recipe to perfection.

    • Use sourdough bread that has even crumbs. Avoid using the ones with wide-open crumbs.
    • Replace chickpea flour with cornstarch or egg mixture.
    • You can use honey in place of sugar if you want.
    • To make them plant-based, use margarine or coconut oil for toasting. Also, use coconut sugar to replace caster sugar and oat milk instead of dairy milk.
    • You can add the spices of your choice. You can make a pumpkin latte spiced French toast or gingerbread spice mix.
    • Adjust the microwave duration according to the power of your microwave You just need to heat the mixture so that the starch starts to thicken.

    Frequently Asked Question

Can you make French toast with sourdough bread?

Yes, you can make French toast using sourdough bread. The sourdough French toast has a better texture, and the open crumbs allow fuller toast that also holds its shape better.
Some people also argue that most original forms of French toast were made using stale sourdough bread only. So, it is one of the organic ways of making French toast.

How to make overnight sourdough bread French toast?

To make overnight French toast, put the batter in a wide rectangular casserole and lay the sourdough bread slices on it. Cover the French toast casserole and place it in the fridge overnight. The next morning you can bake or toast the bread slices.

How to make vegan sourdough French toast?

To make this recipe vegan, you just need to replace whole milk with any plant-based milk and use vegan sugar. Also, use margarine or vegetable oil to toast the sourdough slices. Follow the remaining recipe as such.

What is the best bread for making French toast?

Well, it is a matter of personal choice. If you like soft and custardy French toast, go for egg-based bread like brioche or challah. But if you like it with some structure, go for sourdough bread.

How to make stuffed French toast?

The stuffed French toast that I like to make is hazelnut chocolate French toast. I like to make a sourdough sandwich with hazelnut and chocolate spread. Then I put the sandwich in the batter and soak it on both sides. Then toast it like any regular sandwich on both sides on a buttered skillet until it turns golden brown.

How to make French toast in an air fryer?

To make French toast in an air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 350 oF. Then place a parchment paper in the basket of the air fryer and put the battered bread slices on it. Then air fry them for 3 -4 minutes on each side or until the French toasts are fully cooked through and turn golden brownish.
