Equipment

  • air fryer

Ingredients

  • 12 oz frozen broccoli florets
  • ½ medium onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon of ghee
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon pure garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Step 1 prepare the spice mix

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, add a tablespoon of ghee and melt it. Now add olive oil, salt, chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well using a whisk or a fork.

Step 2 Coat frozen broccoli in the spice mix

  • Now empty the pack of frozen broccoli florets into the bowl. Be quick and coat them with the spices, before the ghee gets time to freeze and solidify.
  • (Do not worry if some mini ghee chunks stick to broccoli. The ghee will melt on air frying and deliver the spices to the broccoli.)

Step 3 Air fry the frozen broccoli

  • Brush the air fryer basket with some oil.
  • Now, transfer the spiced broccoli florets into the air fryer basket or the air fryer racks (if using oven-style air fryers).
  • Set the air fryer temperature to 380 0F ( 193 0C) and air fry them for 10-12 minutes.
  • Halfway through the cooking time, open the air fryer basket and flip the broccoli florets. The best practice is to switch the location of the florets lying on the outer side with the ones in the center. This prevents the broccoli on the outer periphery from getting charred and all cook evenly.
  • The frozen broccoli that is already steamed will take 8 minutes of total cook time in an air fryer.
  • When fully cooked, transfer to a plate and garnish with some toasted sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. And serve hot!.

Notes

  • You can use a spoon to mix the broccoli florets, but if you use your hands, it will be easier to spread as the warm hands prevent the ghee from freezing and broccoli can be easily coated with the spices.
  • Place the frozen broccoli in the air fryer in a single layer. Never overcrowd or overlap the food in an air fryer. If you are just using a bag of frozen broccoli of about 12 oz, this will not be your concern. But if you are air frying a large batch, make sure that there are gaps for air circulation.
  • Flip the broccoli cooking in the air fryer halfway through the cooking time. The best practice is to flip them and change the place of the broccoli florets sitting in the center with that the ones on the periphery of the basket. This ensures the even cooking of all florets.
  • If you are concerned about the mess in the air fryer, you can also add the spices at the end when the broccoli florets are cooked.
  • If you root for a mess-free air frying. Use air fryer silicon mats or punched parchment paper. They do not hamper the air circulation and are also easy to clean and maintain.
  • It is always a good idea to open the air fryer and check for the doneness 2-3 minutes before the suggested time. Pull out the air fryer basket before the lowest given cook time in a recipe and see for yourself, how much more time you need to perfectly air fry the frozen broccoli in your air fryer.
  • The frozen broccoli that is already steamed will take 8 minutes of total cook time at 350 degree F in an air fryer.
