Ingredients
So like I said these sugar-free banana chocolate popsicles are prepared with just two ingredients, banana, and chocolate!
Banana
We need frozen bananas for making this sugar-free banana popsicle recipe.
Choose extra ripe bananas as they are much sweeter and more flavorful. The best way to freeze bananas is to peel them and then slice them into small coins. This way bananas are easier to process.
Some people like to freeze the whole banana. They are great if you are going to thaw them later and use them in some baking recipe. But when you are planning to process them frozen, they will be a task to slice. Though it is not that uphill task if you already have some frozen whole bananas.
But if you are starting from the beginning, it is better to slice the bananas before freezing.
Now, if you do not want to freeze the bananas for some reason, you can use fresh bananas, but remember that the texture of the final popsicles will be different. They will not be as light as the ones made with frozen bananas.
Chocolate
I have used sweetened cocoa mix in this sugar-free banana popsicle recipe. Cocoa mix is actually a combination of cocoa powder, dry milk powder, and sugar. It is not bitter like unsweetened cocoa powder.
If you use unsweetened cocoa powder, the popsicles will become bitter as we are not adding any sugar to these banana pops.
So, use a cocoa mix or a sweetened cocoa powder.
The sweetened cocoa powders do have an added sugar to counter the bitterness of a pure cocoa powder.
If you want, you can add another form of chocolate to it. Be it chocolate chips or a swirl of chocolate ganache inside or coat them with melted chocolate. The possibilities are endless. I have kept it really simple. I did add a slice of strawberry at the end. Just for fun.
Instructions for making sugar-free banana popsicle
1. Slicing and freezing the banana rings
For making the sugar-free banana popsicle, peel some ripe or extra ripe bananas. They are much sweeter and flavorful. Now, slice them into small banana rings or banana coins. I prefer to call them banana coins. Now transfer them to a freezer-safe box or a freezer-safe bag. Remove the excess air from the bag and seal the bag.
It needs to be frozen for at least 6 hours. I usually freeze it overnight.
2. Blending the frozen banana with cocoa mix
Now transfer the frozen banana rings to the blender or a food processor and add cocoa mix or its substitute.
Blend till it becomes smooth and creamy. You can add a splash of cream or milk at this stage if you want to make it more decadent. But it is better to keep them as such and enjoy them guilt-free. These sugar-free banana chocolate popsicles are great for kids. They can have as much as they like. You will not have to worry about the sugar intake and stuff.
3. Transfer to the popsicle mold and add the sticks
Use clean, food-safe, and BPA-free molds. Now, all we need to do is transfer it to the molds. This could be particularly challenging if you have narrow molds like me. In such a case, you can use a small narrow spoon to transfer the blended banana and cocoa into the molds. But the best would be to use a piping bag. Transfer the banana and chocolate paste to a piping bag and then, fill all the molds.
Another thing to take care of is to fill the molds properly. Since the banana chocolate mixture is very thick, there are bound to be some big gaps in the mold on filling.
So to avoid that, just take a skewer and run it into each mold. And then tap the mold a few times on the counter to fill all the gaps. Then, go ahead and place the sticks on the molds. I have used sliced strawberry rings before putting in the sticks.
You can use some fruits in the popsicle or at the base, just like me.
4. Freeze and demold the sugar-free banana popsicle
Then, let this delicious banana pops freeze for at least 8 hours.
Demold and enjoy the gorgeous sugar-free banana popsicle!
If you do not have a mold in hand, DIY a popsicle mold.
*You can use paper or plastic cups as molds. Use the wooden popsicle sticks or skewers as the mold sticks.
*Another option is to use cupcake tin or muffin pans.
Use aluminum foil to cover the pan and then insert the wooden sticks.
Variations of banana chocolate posicles
To make this sugar-free recipe of banana popsicle even more fun and delicious, you can do some customizations to match your taste and preferences. Few possible options are:
- To make these 2 ingredient banana popsicles into a homemade banana fudge pop, just go ahead and add more chocolate and a splash of milk. Use cream or high-fat milk. You can use whole milk or use high fat coconut milk to make it vegan. This recipe as such is vegan and gluten-free.
- To make these sugar-free banana popsicles more vivid, add some frozen or fresh fruits into the mold. You can add the chopped fruits before pouring them into the mixture or halfway in between. Or just like I added strawberries at the base. Get creative. Let your kids add their creativity to these banana chocolate pops.
- Beef up the chocolate: You can add melted chocolate to the molds and tap to remove the excess. Then, add the mixture into the molds. You will get chocolate-coated banana popsicles.
Or just make some chocolate ganache and ass to the mixture, to make it fudgier and chocolatey!
4. Go nuts: You can add nut butter like peanut butter or almond butter to raise the decadence of these sweet treats. Just add it with the cocoa powder and let them incorporate it evenly into the mixture.
Quick tips
- Use ripe bananas as they are sweeter and have an enhanced flavor and aroma. They are the primary ingredient as we will not be using any sweetener in this sugar-free banana popsicle.
- If you are going to use unsweetened cocoa powder, you will have to add a sweetener like honey or maple syrup. Or if you really want to stay sugar-free, use allulose sweetener.
- Since the banana chocolate mixture is very thick, there are bound to be some big gaps in the mold on filling. So go in with a skewer and get rid of the air pockets from the mold. Also, tap the mold, 2-4 times to remove any left-out air pockets.
- As the banana chocolate mixture is thick, it is not easy to pour into the mold. You will have to go in with a small spoon, which is quite time-consuming. So, use a piping bag to fill the molds.
- Choose from the various variation options stated in the section to make the sugar free banana popsicle even more fun, decadent, and delicious.
