🍶 Ingredients required to make Matcha Boba Tea
Matcha
Matcha is nothing, but a very fine quality green tea leaves powder. We need quality matcha powder for making the matcha boba. Top grade matcha is called ceremonial matcha. This matcha is made with the most tender baby green tea leaves, hence it is sweeter and has the most vibrant green color. So, if you have a ceremonial grade go for it.
The second grade is culinary grade matcha which is the most used and easily available matcha powder. I use culinary-grade matcha for cooking all sorts of goodies with matcha. Do check out the matcha bread, chai matcha latte, and matcha cookies.
Tapioca pearls
I am going to use black boba in this matcha bubble tea recipe. It is a tapioca-based boba. But there are numerous other options. Just want to list the options that you can explore.
Popping boba
You can also go for popping boba. They are juicy than chewy. They are fruit-juice-filled bubbles, pop open inside your mouth and release a burst of flavor. In recent years, popping boba is gaining more popularity because of its versatility. These juice-filled balls are created with molecular gastronomy and are delicious.
Jelly boba
Jelly boba is another option. They are made up of Konjac or coconut meat. The best thing about jelly boba is that it can be stored for days without getting spoiled. Also, they do not need cooking.
Types of Tapioca boba
You can any of the following types of tapioca boba.
Clear boba: These are translucent tapioca pearls that are almost flavorless. They are used in milk teas, and they absorb flavors from the milk and tea.
Brown boba/ black boba: These kinds of tapioca pearls are more prominent. Brown boba is flavored with brown sugar syrup which gives it a brown color and deep caramel and licoricey flavor.
Flavored Boba: These kinds of tapioca pearls are flavored with fruit juice and work best in fruit-based boba drinks. They come in all types of tropical flavors.
Mini boba: They are the same as the clear or brown boba, but just smaller. I used them in my Lychee boba recipe.
Brown Sugar
Brown sugar syrup is a luscious thick caramel-like syrup that is a must for making boba. Not just that, this easy-to-make syrup is very versatile and can be used to sweeten and flavor all sorts of drinks. Please note that it differs from the simple syrup in terms of its thickness and consistency. Simply make it by combining 2 parts of cane sugar with 1 part of water. Also, add some agents like citric acid or lime juice to prevent crystallization.
Milk
I have used whole milk in this matcha boba tea. You can use 2 percent or skim milk. It is a matter of personal choice. You can use plant-based milk like coconut milk, oat milk, or soy milk. Use the milk straight from the fridge.
🔪How to make matcha boba?
Step 1 Cooking boba
If you are using popping boba or jelly boba, skip to step 2. But if you are using tapioca boba pearls like me, you will be cooking boba in boiling water. Follow the package instructions to cook boba.
I am using brown sugar boba. It is flavored with brown sugar syrup. It is better to buy fast-cooking boba.
To cook ⅓ cup of brown sugar or black boba, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Then add the tapioca pearls to the boiling water. Let them boil for 4-5 minutes or until they come floating to the top.
The exact time will vary with the type of boba you use. But look for them to come to the top. When boba starts to float, cook them for 10 minutes at medium heat. Then, turn off the heat and cover the pan and let the boba soak for 5 more minutes. Then, strain the water and gather the cooked boba.
Transfer them into a bowl and add brown sugar syrup to dunk the tapioca pearls. Follow the recipe in the link to make the brown sugar syrup, if you have not already.
But you can also use maple syrup to soak the cooked boba and as a sweetener.
Step 2 Make matcha
Mix 1 teaspoon matcha green powder in half a cup of water. Use a bamboo whisk, Chasen to mix and froth the matcha. You can also use a milk frother if you do not have the traditional bamboo whisk. That is what I used.
You can also mix matcha directly in milk and go ahead to make the matcha milk tea boba.
Step 3 Assemble matcha boba
In a glass, add brown sugar dunked boba pearls. Then add a handful of ice cubes. Over ice cubes, pour the milk. Now add the matcha. Drop in a boba straw. Mix everything using the straw.
Sip, chewy, and enjoy!
🫙How to store cooked boba?
Well, there is no point in storing it for long, the boba gets starchy and hardens.
But if you desperately want to store the boba, refrigerate it while being dunked in syrup in an airtight container. Now, when you want to consume it, reheat it in a saucepan with some added water. It will become soft and chewy again, But just not the same.
