Best frozen onion rings for air fryer

I like thick-cut onion rings and Alexia onion rings are my favorite. But I most often buy Great Value Onion rings, which are equally good. Some other brands of frozen onion rings that you can try air frying are:

    • Nathan’s Thick sliced Battered Onion Rings
    • Mc Cain Onion Rings
    • Wegman’s thick-cut onion rings
    • Ore-Ida Gourmet Onion Rings: If you are Vegan
    • Ian’s Gluten-free onion: If you are gluten-free
    • Red Robins Crispy Onion Rings: Best Vegan choice.

    Dipping sauce for onion rings

To enjoy these onion rings; you will need a dipping sauce of your choice. You can use any of the below-mentioned dipping sauces for onion rings. Or if you have any personal favorite sauce that goes great with onion rings, do mention that in the comments.

    • Ranch
    • Honey mustard
    • Garlic cilantro sauce
    • Chutney
    • Ketchup and hot sauce mix

    Cooking Oil spray

Cooking oil spray is optional. You can brush them with oil using a pastry brush or use any oil dispenser to spray the frozen onion rings with oil, after putting them in the air fryer basket.

    🍶Equipment

    Air fryer

Another thing that you will need to make this onion rings recipe is an air fryer!

I am using an 8 qt air fryer. You might be using a smaller or oven-sized air fryer. Find the details for using them in the procedure section.

🔪How to cook frozen onion rings in an air fryer?

Step 1 Preheat the air fryer

To air fry, frozen onion rings in an air fryer, start by preheating the air fry. Set the air fryer temperature to 400 oF (about 204 0C) and let it preheat with an empty basket for 4 minutes.

After 4 minutes open the air fryer basket and place onion rings in the basket spaced evenly.

We do not need to thaw the onion rings, take the box out of the freezer, or open and empty it directly in the air fryer basket.

Step 2 Air fry frozen onion rings

images of frozen onion rings cooking in air fryer basket

After placing the frozen onion rings in the air fryer, set the air fryer temperature to 400 oF and set the timer to 8 minutes, and close the air fryer basket. If you are using oven style air fryer, use the same process.

After air frying for 4 minutes, open the basket and flip the onion rings using silicon or wooden tongs. Then close the basket and air fry for another 3-4 minutes or until they become golden brown and crispy.

Take them out of the air fryer and serve them hot with your favorite dipping sauce of your choice.

Please note that the frozen onion rings cook very quickly in a preheated air fryer. So, keep a close eye.

What to serve with onion rings?

These frozen air fryer onion rings are best enjoyed hot when crispy and crunchy on the outside.  Since these are super crunchy, they go great with some light and healthy veggies like air-fried Brussel sprouts, Air fried broccoli, air-fried frozen green beans, or a green crunchy salad.

    🫙Storage and Reheating

If you have kids in your family, these are not going to last. But if you made a big batch for entertaining and had some leftovers, the best way to store them is to put them in the fridge for one day or two. Place them in a ziplocked bag or an airtight container. If you are not going to use them within two days, it is better to freeze them in a freezer-safe bag.

To reheat onion rings, air fryer them at 350 degrees F for3-4 minutes or until they get crispy again.

    💭Pro Tips

    • Do not bother to defrost frozen onion rings. Most air fryer recipes cook best from frozen.
    • If you are doing a big batch, do not overcrowd them. Overcrowding food in an air fryer basket is a recipe for disappointment. Place onion in a single layer and leave space for air circulation.
    • Since these frozen onion rings air fry very fast, stay close by, and keep an eye. Open the basket at 4 minutes to see how much more time they need.
    • Do not forget to flip or rotate them halfway through the cooking time. This ensures even cooking and crunch on all sides.
    • Use air fryer silicone mats or parchment paper for mess-free cooking.
    • Bake option in an instant pot is another novel way to make frozen onion rings. But the air fryer is certainly quicker and better.

    ❓Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperature should I air fry the frozen onion rings?

Well, you can air fry the frozen onion rings at any temperature between 370-400 0F. For the crispy onion rings, go for a higher temperature of 400 0F. They cook way faster at 400 0F and turn out crunchier.
Of course, they will take longer at 360 0F (1820C). Also, I feel that they turn out harder than crunchier if cooked at this range.  Though the great value suggests 360 0F for air frying them, I have observed that 400 0F (204 0F) for 7-8 minutes yields the best onion rings.

How do I get crispy onion rings in an air fryer?

To cook frozen onion rings in the oven, start by preheating the oven to 425 0F. Then empty the onion rings on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let them bake in the oven for 16-18 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy.

How long should you preheat an air fryer?

The air fryer needs 4-5 minutes to preheat. Also, the size of the air fryer basket governs how much exact time an air fryer will need to preheat. Generally, we go for 4-5 minutes. But the smaller air fryers could preheat in about 3 minutes.
