Ingredients for making blueberry boba
1. Fresh or frozen blueberries
You can use fresh or frozen blueberries. If you can get your hands on wild blueberry, it is also an option that you can explore. One time I made it with frozen wild blueberries, and it was delicious.
You can use store-bought blueberry milk also. It makes the recipe a whole lot easier.
Another option is to use blueberry-flavored teabags. The most used blueberry tea is blueberry lavender tea. The tea itself will give a good amount of flavor, but you will need to add some cream to build the texture of the bubble tea.
2. Boba
For making this blueberry bubble tea I have used black boba. They are made with tapioca starch and flavored with brown sugar. They become black on cooking, hence the name black boba. The brown sugar boba is most widely used and easily available.
You can use any boba of your choice. Mini, clear, rainbow or pastel-colored boba, or blueberry popping boba. The blueberry popping pearls or popping boba is filled with concentrated blueberry juice and is a great addition to bubble tea.
If you do not tapioca pearls you can DIY Blueberry boba pearls at home. To make it, you will need blueberry sauce and tapioca starch. It is not a difficult process but a little tedious.
3. Sugar
We need white cane sugar to make the blueberry sauce. If you are vegan choose some vegan white sugar or you can also go for unrefined sugars.
4. Whole milk
Bubble tea demands whole milk. It must be rich and smooth. Though we can always substitute it with low-fat milk, that will alter the flavor and texture of the blueberry milk tea.
If you want to make it vegan, then use oat milk or soy milk.
5. Tea
I am using black tea in this recipe. You can use black tea, green tea, earl grey, or any other tea that you like. I like the flavor of black tea with blueberry. You can use a teabag of blueberry tea if you want.
Step by Step Instructions to Make Blueberry Boba
This blueberry boba tea recipe does take some prep time as you need to brew tea, cook tapioca pearls, and make blueberry simple syrup or sauce. But trust me it is worth it.
So, let us make this blueberry-flavored milk tea with tapioca pearls.
Step 1 Brew the tea
You can use any tea you like, as I stated in the ingredient section. I have used black tea.
In a cup, I placed a teabag. Then I boiled 1 cup of water to make the tea. I switched off the heat when the water started to boil then I poured the water into the cup. To guarantee optimal tea flavor extraction, lift the tea bag 2-3 times in the cup to allow movement of the tea leaves. Then place a plate over the cup and steep the tea bag in the hot water for 3 minutes. Remove the teabag from the teacup and set it aside.
This step should be completed ahead of time so that you have enough time to cool the tea.
Step 2 Make blueberry milk
You can use blueberries as boba: sort small berries: use wild blueberries, they are smaller than the cultivated ones.
What is blueberry milk? How to make it fresh at home?
Blueberry milk is simply blueberry-flavored milk that is very easy to make at home.
Skip this step if you're using store-bought blueberry milk. All you have to do now is cook the boba and create the bubble tea.
If you're preparing blueberry milk at home, then, follow along. It can be made with fresh or frozen blueberries.
There are two ways to make it.
- Simply combine the blueberries and milk in a blender, filter, and use. This, in my opinion, is not the ideal method. The milk's blueberry flavor isn't strong enough for a bubble tea.
- Make a blueberry sauce or blueberry syrup first. To make the blueberry sauce, combine blueberries and sugar in a pot. We can use fresh or frozen blueberries in this procedure. You can also go for wild blueberries. We soften them by cooking them with sugar. They are cooked until they are all mushy and the sauce gets thick and bubbly.
To press and mash the blueberries, use a potato masher. When finished, strain the contents through a strainer or muslin cloth, or cheesecloth.
Add the chilled milk to the blueberry sauce. Mix everything thoroughly, and there you have it. Blueberry Milk!
Store it in the fridge for 3-4 days and enjoy as such or make it into a delicious bubble tea.
Step 3 Cooking boba
Cook the boba according to the directions on the package. If you're using popping boba or jelly boba, there's no need to cook them However, if you're like me and use tapioca boba pearls, you'll be boiling the boba.
Brown sugar boba is what I'm using. It is better to purchase boba that cooks quickly. Blueberry sauce is used to flavor it. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil to simmer ⅓ cup brown sugar or black tapioca balls. Allow them to boil for 4-5 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
The amount of time depends on the type of boba you use. However, expect them to rise to the top. Cook for a further 5-7 minutes over medium heat when the boba starts to float. Then remove the pan from the heat and cover it, allowing the boba to soak for another 5 minutes. After that, strain the water and collect the boba that has been cooked.
Place them in a mixing dish. The tapioca pearls are then dipped in blueberry sauce. Brown sugar syrup is the traditional option. You can go for that if you want. However, you can use any syrup you prefer. Cooked tapioca pearls tend to stick together. So, this is a crucial step.
Step 4 Assemble the blueberry boba tea
To make the blueberry milk boba, start by putting the boba in it. Depending on how much boba you want in your tea, add more or less. I normally use less boba in my tea because it is high in calories and contains a lot of starch.
Then, in each glass, add 9-10 ice cubes. Pour half a cup of brewed tea into each glass. Add the blueberry milk last. Place a boba straw in the mixture and stir briskly. If you like, you may also add cream to make it creamier.
You can also add some fresh blueberries instead of boba. But use only wild blueberries. These are smaller and could be sucked easily through the boba straw.
That's it... Bubble tea with wild blueberries and milk!
Have you ever tried a blueberry boba smoothie prepared with bubble tea? I'm completely smitten with it. Soon, I will be dropping a bubble tea smoothie recipe.
